ABOUT

Japan: from a culture to admire, to a culture to use.

So the Japan you met can come home with you.

JAPONISME

A sense of beauty that crossed the sea.

Around the time of the 1867 Paris Exposition, Japanese art and craft reached Europe and found their way into people’s lives and work.

Not only admired, but lived with and made from. That spread later came to be called Japonisme.

Accounts of how Japonisme spread, and of its background, vary.

THE WRAPPER

A picture meant as wrapping moved someone.

Ukiyo-e and picture books, so the story goes, crossed the sea as packing for ceramics.

Pictures meant only to protect what was inside moved people on the other side of the ocean.

Every JAPONISM bar is wrapped in a single work of art because we want that to happen again, in life today.

WHY JAPONISM

  1. We are not here to make Japanese souvenirs.
  2. We want to make a Japan that doesn’t end with looking.
  3. A Japan that stays in daily life, after the journey.
  4. So we began with soap.

The view, the scent, the memory of that moment. Unwrap it, touch water, use it up little by little. When it is gone, the wrapper and the memory remain. That is what we want to make.

WHY WE STARTED

Why we started JAPONISM.

For those who visit Japan and go home having fallen for it,
we want to make something that keeps the memory from ending with the trip.

And for those of us who live here,
we hope it becomes a way to find, once more,
the Japan we never knew or simply overlooked.

The usual seasons.
A view we passed without noticing.
The scents and handwork that stay with a place.

Some of Japan goes unseen precisely because it is so close.

The “!” in the JAPONISM logo
is the “i” of JAPONISM, turned upside down.

Shift your point of view a little,
and a familiar Japan looks new again.

For people around the world, and for people who live in Japan —
we hope each rediscovers Japan through their own eyes.

And we want to deliver things that let that memory stay in daily life,
rather than end with a trip or a single moment.

That is where JAPONISM began.

CRAFT

From real places, and real hands.

JAPONISM soap is finished one by one at a workshop in Fukuoka.

Rice bran, volcanic ash from Kagoshima, camellia oil from the Goto Islands, tea leaf from Uji, yuzu from Kito in Tokushima.

We never invent a Japan for the sake of the story. Real places, real materials, and human hands.

OUR PRINCIPLES

  1. 01

    Real.

Places, materials, makers, seasons. We never invent a Japan for the story.

  2. 02

    Made to be used up.

Not only to display, but to use in daily life.

  3. 03

    Room to breathe.

We don’t explain everything; each person brings their own Japan.

  4. 04

    Culture, both ways.

A Japanese sense of beauty that once crossed the sea — sent out again, from everyday life today.

In lives all over the world,
a Japan of one’s own.

Take this Japan in your hands.
